The history of Cancun is comparatively short. The city was born in the twentieth century when the Mexican government decided to create a touristic area in what was an almost uninhabited island. The few people who did live there were dedicated to the cultivation of coconut trees. All that there was 60 years ago in what is now Cancun were vestiges of the Mayan Empire.

The Mexico National Tourism Fund was the tool which was used by the government to begin the development of the zone, a development which started with infrastructures such as the road which joins Cancun to the peninsula. This link brought work and income to the zone, as did the urban development which was designed to convert the area in an impressive tourist destination. That is the best way to describe what Cancun is today- a little tourism idyll, full of hotels, apartments, chalets, villas, little hostels, etc, every type of accommodation option for you to enjoy your holiday in Cancun. Cancun these days is one of the foremost tourist destinations in the world, with beaches of white Caribbean sands, a salt water lake- Nichupte, where you can go diving; bars, shops, restaurants…

It was in the 1970s and 1980s that Cancun really began to take on the form it has today, with the construction on the part of the Mexican government of the first hotels. Later on, investment by the main international tour operators did the rest.

From the 1980s Cancun saw a tourism boom, with a population which multiplied several times in a short number of years, people who arrived mainly from the Yucatan Peninsula, as well as the rest of the country, and other parts of Latin America and Europe, attracted by the job opportunities of the zone.

Today Cancun is well known the world over as a tourist destination which offers great beaches, quality hotels and other accommodation options, coral reefs for diving, and good services.
